THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: SHUTTER UP!

Shutter Up was started because when Claire Ditommaso purchased a Fabric-Insert Shutter, and had to make the inserts. "Necessity is the mother of invention", and so it began--a business selling Shutters. The name Shutter-Up evolved from "Shut Her Up" with shutters by Claire, but Claire knew that some women would be offended by that so after repeating it many times over, SHUTTER-UP was launched in 1984!

The heart and soul of Claire’s business is repeat customers and referrals. Anyone can sell you a shutter ,but not anyone can install it properly. Service is my number one priority, and that coupled with quality products is a "client pleaser".

Shutters are the number one seller, followed by a full line of Hunter Douglas products, custom draperies, cornices, roman shades, bedspreads, dustruffles, pillow shams, reupholstery, slipcovers, and decorating advice.

Their present location was built over 140 years ago and was a working farm for much of the first 100 years. Lobster Barn is continuing its working tradition today. The Lobster Barn was founded over twenty years ago to sell some of the groundfish and lobsters directly to the public from their commercial fishing endeavors.

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: NORTH END TREATS!
It doesn’t make much sense, a Greek/Irish kid from Framingham owning North End Treats of Framingham, however, Mike O’Neil has the right support! Mike’s wife Stephanie Bova-O’Neil and his partner Dan Torchio, are both Italian.
For years Mike and his father in-law, Anthony Bova of Bovas Bakery in the North End on Prince St. (open 24hrs) talked about where a good spot would be, to open a location. Mike felt comfortable in Framingham and when the liquor store that had been there for 45 years moved he jumped all over it!
Nearing a 1 year completion Dan and Mike worked on the menu (Dan cooked, Mike ate!) Mike always knew it would be a perfect fit because Dan was one of his best friends and he was the only one Mike knew growing up who would cook a sauce, otherwise known as "GRAVY" on a Friday night instead of going out.
Dan brought a lot of his family recipes and his own ideas for the food end, while he trained in Mike’s father in-law's bakery where he learned the secret recipes that had been there for over 75 years, bringing together a wide range of Italian heritage.

At North End Treats we offer Brick oven pizza from traditional to our signature, Panini’s, wraps, hot foods such as eggplant, chicken parmesan, chicken ziti and broccoli, and of course all the top selling baked items from the North End such as cannolis, lobster tails, whoopie pies, tiramisu etc. Everything is made in small batches, fresh daily. We also offer catering!

THE SPOTLIGHT IS ON: Annie’s Book Store

Dave and Shirley Peterson did not anticipate that they would become successful entrepreneurs that afternoon in June, thirty-one years ago when they walked into their first Annie’s Book Store. As they strolled in between the shelves of gently used books, they looked at each other and just knew that this was it. Three weeks later, the Peterson’s opened their very own Annie’s Book Store in Raynham, MA.
Many of their friends and family thought that they were crazy for opening up a used books store. They might have been right. For the first several years, like any start up business, it was tough going.
Getting customers was their first priority. Dave and Shirley did not have a big advertising budget, so they would travel around the local neighborhood with their children and tape flyers for the store on local mailboxes. In those early days, if the store made ten dollars of profit in a day, in was very exciting!

Over the years, the Peterson’s store has evolved to include offering new best sellers, audio books, special occasion cards, balloon bouquets, and a large selection of Melissa and Doug products. In addition, Annie’s Book Store also offers balloon decorating for all types of functions including proms, weddings, parties, etc. The balloon delivery and decorating has served to differentiate Annie’s Book Store from their local competition.

Dave and Shirley spend the time to get to know the people who frequent their store. This personal touch serves them well, as they have many repeat customers, whom they know by name.

Spotlight on Jazzercise, Owner – Barbara Lang
Jazzercise started in 1969 and Barbara Lang joined in 1984 as a student while owning Dance On With Barbara Lang dance school, teaching young and old ballet, tap, jazz and kindergym.
As a member of The Dance Teachers of Boston, Barbara saw a Jazzercise demonstration and then found a class in her home town area. Right from the start, she knew she wanted to become an instructor….combining the fun of dance while increasing strength and heart muscle. One of Barbara’s first interviews was with the girl who gave the demo, she had brought Jazzercise to Massachusetts. It is a franchise with the Corporation based in California.
After months of training and passing the Instructor Certification, Barbara opened up her first class at The First Church in Weymouth. Jazzercise is starting the 27th year in the same Weymouth location. Barbara’s daughter Kris Canniff became an instructor in 1992 after graduation from U. Mass, Amherst before attending Newbury College for Physical Therapist Associate Degree. One of her students, Shannon Gordon, became an instructor and started teaching October, 2008, while Barbara was recuperating from rotator cuff surgery.
There are three morning and three evening classes with three instructors covering low and high impact aerobic dance routines. Choreography (styles of Rock n’Roll, kick boxing, country, jazz dance etc.) is from California, including a wide variety of music from pop, rock, hip hop, Latin, R & B, etc. Customers attend for different reasons: fitness, health, mental and social; no dance background needed…..just move.
The class has many ages (teens-80’s), fitness levels and body types smiling on the dance floor. The 55-60 minute class includes warm-up, aerobic curve of 25-30 plus minutes, and strength conditioning for abdominal, arms and legs and stretching incorporating yoga and pilates movements.
Many customers comment on the fun of Jazzercise while getting a full body workout—a combination of success and sweat. The program stays up to date with fitness, music and dance movements. Families, friends and new acquaintances moving to the same beat!

Over the last 5 years Lee’s store has continued to grow at a steady pace. Over 45,000 happy customers have been served! Her favorite part of owning the store is seeing that constant happiness on the faces of her customers and recipients as well as all the wonderful notes she receives complimenting the arrangements and her fantastic staff. Lee loves being able to provide fruit to all the many charities and fundraisers as well.
A favorite moment was one Valentine's Day week when Lee realized that her staff had produced and delivered over 750 arrangements without a single bump in the road. It was so exciting watching the enthusiasm and excitement of accomplishing a major team goal. It was awesome!

Over the past 5 years Lee’s Edible Arrangements store has contributed almost $10,000 in charitable contributions to the local community. Her store supports the local elder communities, volunteers, schools, churches, private fundraisers, VNA of South Shore, and many, many more. This is also one of Lee’s favorite parts of owning an Edible Arrangement franchise; helping others raise money for so many great causes.

Lee has lived in Hanover for 25 years. She is a 5th generation Bostonian and grew up in the city which she is very proud of. She has one son who was instrumental in the successful opening of the store.
Lee has an open door policy with all of her customers. She keeps her business card and cell number on the front counter and welcomes any correspondence with suggestions or questions. Most of the staff has been with her since the beginning or close to the beginning so they are highly trained and motivated to give all customers and recipients a great experience!

Almquist Flowerland was started in 1930 by Henning and Helen Almquist. They started with a small greenhouse behind their home and were only pen during the spring season. In the early 1940's, Helen starting designing flower arrangements and developed the infamous "gravy boat club". You could purchase a gravy boat filled with flowers for only $3.00! The new retail store was moved to 326 Franklin and was known as Almquist Rock Garden Flower Shop because of the beautiful rock garden that many Quincy residents still speak of today.

In 1952, Kenneth entered the business and 1957, Robert entered the business. Helen passed away in 1959. In 1963, the business was incorporated and became Almquist Flowerland, Inc. Henning passed away in 1971 and Kenneth died suddenly in 1977. Robert's sons, Scott and Bobby started in the 1980's and today, Bob, his wife, Rhealynne and their two children, Jim and Sarah run the business today. Almquist Flowerland is proud that it is operated by 3rd and 4th generations.

The Spotlight is on Sel De LaTerre!
Prior to opening Sel de la Terre in the spring of 2000, Chef/Partner Geoff Gardner spent eight years as the sous chef at Boston’s prestigious L’Espalier restaurant, where he immersed himself in the teachings of his mentor, L’Espalier’s Chef/Proprietor Frank McClelland. McClelland and Gardner envisioned the opening of a rustic French brasserie, where they could serve seasonal and locally grown Provençal-inspired cuisine in a casual setting. They agreed the perfect first location would be the beautiful and ever-developing downtown waterfront area of Boston.

In the spring of 2000, they realized their dream with the opening of Sel de la Terre. At the helm of Sel de la Terre’s kitchen, Chef Gardner always practices the service philosophy and cooking techniques he learned working with Chef McClelland at L’Espalier, all which quickly helped Sel de la Terre become one of Boston’s most highly-acclaimed restaurants and to earn such impressive accolades as “Best French Restaurant” by Boston Magazine in 2003 and 2004 and 100 Hottest Restaurants in the World by Condé Nast Traveler. In September 2007, Chefs McClelland and Gardner presented their slice of Provence to the suburbs, with the opening of a second Sel de la Terre in the brand new wing of the Natick Mall. Soon after, Sel de la Terre - Back Bay opened its doors on Boylston Street in Boston next to its sister L’Espalier, which together form one spectacular dining destination in one of Boston’s most prestigious neighborhoods.
The rustic simplicity of our cuisine is inspired by New England’s proud agricultural and maritime heritage. We go to great lengths to support the local farmer and fisherman. We are grounded in the intent to marry the technique of southern French cuisine with local, hearty and fresh ingredients. We even source much of our produce from our own Apple Street Farm, operated by Frank McClelland in Essex, MA.

Each Sel de la Terre kitchen is chef driven. We believe that giving our chefs the culinary freedom to interpret our longstanding philosophy using inspirations from his personal history is the key to offering the best food possible. We are proud to give our talented chefs this culinary independence and they give us the confidence that every customer is thoroughly satisfied no matter where they enjoy our cuisine.

The SPOTLIGHT is on American Kempo Karate Academy!

American Kempo Karate Academy (AKKA) is a professional martial arts school that started in 1995 by taking over an existing martial arts school that was established in 1983 in Weymouth, MA. AKKA's founder Mark DiNino started training at the original school in 1984 at the age of 13. He quickly learned that martial arts training was not just about physical fighting but about personal power and self development. Mr. DiNino saw an opportunity to enhance people through martial arts training by becoming an instructor and eventually the owner and founder of a new organization. He then saw another opportunity to improve martial arts school business systems which would dramatically increase the quality of the martial arts training experience for the students.
AKKA's focus is building self confidence in both kids and adults. Their training programs build "Skills For Life". As students get in better physical shape and develop practical self defense skills with the guidance of the instructors, they build up their self confidence. The training is also a tremendous stress reliever which allows people to handle their life situations more effectively. The goal oriented training with all these great benefits keeps students motivated to continue.
