Prove your loyalty

February 6, 2012

Before the last piece of confetti hit the artificial turf in Indianapolis last night, the question on the minds of stunned Patriots fans turned to Spring Training.

Yes, indeed, like the whiplash suffered by unsuspecting locals who had taken their eyes off the Bruins last year (just before they grabbed the Stanley Cup), by 10 p.m. our fickle hearts dropped Brady and Wilfork and Gronkowski in search of fulfillment.

Is it fair or safe to look in the direction of the Red Sox? Only time will tell. While the hometown team celebrates the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park this season with all of the nostalgia and hoopla that will include, they will be starting from Square One with a new manager, Bobby Valentine, replacing Terry Francona, new General Manager Ben Cherington replacing Theo Epstein, and local favorite David 'Big Papi' Ortiz wrangling for a vote of confidence through a multi-year contract. Perhaps it won't be all that difficult to put the sting of the Patriots loss behind us after all.

Football is so yesterday. Bring on the Sox.

But what will we do until February 19 when the Sox report to the new stadium in Florida for spring training?

It's too bad that the skating surface has been removed at Fenway. The high school hockey games and public skating offered there apparently generated over $28 million in revenue.

It's not too soon to start planning to attend a few games, and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd will play a concert on the outfield this summer, but that's the only non-baseball event announced thus far.  You don't want to wait until next week, when all of the other Patriots fans recover from their defeat-induced stupors and start paying attention to the Sox, because the team has a long streak of sold-out games. Get your seats now. http://www.fenwayfanatics.com/fenway/tickets/

In this state where team loyalty means so much, you can prove that with a $250 or $475 custom-inscribed brick to be mortared somewhere near Gate B or C.
